You’re Not Worth Cancelling

YOU SUCK

For a lot of years, we’ve seen people worried about being cancelled, and a whole lot of people (grifters) out there selling (grifting) ways to make yourself uncancellable.

It’s easily some of the dumbest shit going.

For almost ALL entrepreneurs, being “cancelled” would amount to having to reboot and find new people who either haven’t caught up to your bullshit yet or who are brain dead enough to forget the many lies you told before you switched up your grift and started on this new (but ENTIRELY the same) path.

Wait – that’s the grifters…

But also for other people. If you get cancelled for saying some stupid shit – you reboot. It’s REALLY not a big deal – and that is said with a long track record of up close and personal experience with burning your life down.

Until you’re to a point in your online career, being cancelled is an inconvenience and a learning experience. Once you get to the point where losing your entire Instagram audience would actually cause you to lose not only your current revenue – but you ability to ever earn again – you are uncancellable.

Want proof? Guess how many people have been tarred and feathered online only to come back a week later with a new brand and set up shop doing the same thing for the same people? I’ve seen it dozens and dozens of times. Probably hundreds of times since the mid 90’s when I started using the online universe for marketing and petty criminality.

You fuck up, you restart, you rebuild, you keep going. Uncancellable.

Is that advice worth paying for? In my opinion – no. Ostensibly, in business – we’re all adults, and any adult should be able to see that. Do we need to pay to be told to remember to open our mouths before we try to insert food?

Ultimately, at the root of this worry and this economy based on that worry is fear.

Fear of being yourself. Everyone – no matter what they say – has that fear. If what you are is easily marketable, great. If what you are is a sleaze that is imminently hateworthy… that’s what branding is for.

NOW…

All of that said, and my main point: These stupid motherfuckers selling you “confidence” so you can say whatever you want without fear of cancellation? They never say anything worth being cancelled over. Because if they did – if they actually risked it – they couldn’t keep pushing their grift.

The most milquetoast content from the most creatively bereft nitwits is the content of the person selling you how to be authentic, bold, creative and loud online.

At best, they’re following a formula meant to skirt around any real butthurt or terms of service infraction – and that isn’t authentic, bold, creative or loud.

It’s marketing.

And the idea that these people make any money at all is fucking depressing.

Doesn’t give me a lot of hope for the future of marketing.

Or humanity.
