Q1: Who the hell is Uncle Jimbo, anyway?
I’m not a person, I’m a bad idea given flesh.
Q2: What’s the worst design trend you’d happily bury in the woods outside Asheville?
Minimalist beige “earth tone” branding that looks like it was birthed by a kombucha scoby. We don’t need another coffee shop with a logo that’s just a hand-drawn chevron and the word “folk.”
Q3: Is branding actually important, or is it just expensive therapy for businesses?
Yes. Both. Branding is therapist with a knife. It’s convincing yourself you’re someone worth loving, while simultaneously tricking everyone else into agreeing.
Q4: If someone says, “Just make me a logo,” what’s your response?
Would you ask a surgeon for “just a little open-heart surgery, nothing fancy.”?
Q5: Which do you trust more: a client brief or your dog?
Charlie never lied to me about his “vision” for Q4 deliverables.
Q6: What’s a design mistake you’ve made that you’d never admit in public (except here)?
I don’t make design mistakes, and I never go in public. This is a stupid question.
Q7: Do you think art is supposed to be beautiful, useful, or just make people uncomfortable?
Art is supposed to grab you by the lapels, whisper something obscene in your ear, then vanish before you can respond.
Q8: If mindset is everything, why do so many people have one that sucks?
Because most people treat their mind like a yard sale. Cluttered, half-broken, and no one actually wants to buy anything.
Q9: What’s the difference between design and decoration?
Design changes the way you move through the world. Decoration just hangs there.
Q10: Finally: when all else fails, what’s your go-to advice for anyone trying to make something worth a damn?
Set it on fire. If it still makes sense in the ashes, it’s real. If not, you’ve invented another startup pitch deck.
